Client story

A 120-year-old energy company reports its emissions bilingually

ESE-Energia completed GHG Protocol carbon accounting and set a goal of carbon neutrality by 2026.

“NGS made a demanding project clear. The bilingual report serves both our Finnish and Swedish-speaking stakeholders.”

Jarno Marttinen, ESE-Energia

ESE-Energia is an eastern Uusimaa energy company with over 120 years of history, producing and selling electricity and district heat. A long history in energy production means strong links to emission-generating processes, and requires honesty in reporting.

Starting point

ESE-Energia wanted to carry out GHG Protocol-compliant carbon accounting as part of developing their sustainability programme. The goal was carbon neutrality by 2026, and achieving that goal required a clear baseline.

The company’s distinctive feature is bilingualism: ESE-Energia’s stakeholders are both Finnish and Swedish-speaking, and reporting needed to be delivered in both languages.

What was done

NGS carried out ESE-Energia’s organisational carbon accounting Scope 1–3. In an energy company’s accounting, special attention was paid to energy production emissions, purchased energy emission factors, and the significance of different supply chain components.

The report was produced in both Finnish and Swedish, so that it serves all of the company’s stakeholders equally.

Result

ESE-Energia received an official GHG Protocol-compliant emissions report in bilingual form. The report created a concrete foundation for monitoring progress toward the carbon neutrality goal and for communicating with stakeholders.
