A 70-year-old technology company steps into the world of carbon accounting
Aro Systems launched its first GHG Protocol carbon accounting in autumn 2024 and found a practical approach to sustainability reporting.
“NGS made sustainability reporting concrete and manageable. Our starting point was zero, but the process moved forward clearly.”
Kristian Ruotsalainen, Aro Systems
Aro Systems is a Finnish technology company that has operated for over 70 years. A long history and established market position don’t mean sustainability reporting is already in hand. In many long-established companies, structures were built at a time when emissions were not measured.
Starting point
Aro Systems launched its first official carbon accounting in autumn 2024. The company had no previously compiled emissions data, and the starting point was to understand what GHG Protocol-compliant accounting practically means for them specifically.
The goal was a practical, manageable process, not a heavy project that takes months of internal time.
What was done
NGS mapped Aro Systems’ operational structure and identified the most relevant emission sources. Data collection was handled in collaboration with Aro Systems’ team, and the accounting was done per GHG Protocol methodology Scope 1–3.
The project’s emphasis was on clarity: where emissions come from, which are the most significant items, and how accounting can be repeated in subsequent years without major additional resources.
Result
Aro Systems received their first official emissions report, which creates the foundation for comparison in coming years and for sustainability reporting. The project showed that starting from zero is no barrier: a systematic approach makes even the first accounting high quality.
