SBTi and Other Frameworks
Support for SBTi: preparing the accounting foundation, formulating targets, and drafting the submission. NGS does not validate targets; SBTi does.
What this is about
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is an international initiative through which companies set science-based emission reduction targets. SBTi’s new Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 was released in June 2026, and V1.3.1 targets can still be submitted through the end of 2027. V2.0 validation opens gradually during 2027 and becomes mandatory for new targets in early 2028.
Which version makes sense for you, and how to handle the V2.0 transition, is something we go through at the start of the project. The details are still moving during the transition period.
Who this is for
- Companies seeking SBTi approval for their targets
- Companies with an existing SBTi target preparing for the V2.0 transition
- Organisations receiving SBTi-related questions from customers or investors
- Companies that want to understand concretely what SBTi expects of them
How NGS helps
Accounting foundation: SBTi requires valid Scope 1, 2, and (usually) Scope 3 accounting. We go through the calculation and, if needed, fill it out so it holds up to SBTi requirements.
Target formulation: we help formulate near-term and long-term targets per the chosen standard and version. We walk through the differences between V1.3.1 and V2.0 and advise which fits your situation.
Submission preparation: we compile the required documentation, review the numbers, and prepare for SBTi’s possible follow-up questions.
NGS does not approve or validate targets. SBTi does that in its own process. Our role is technical preparation so the submission is in order when it goes in.
What you get
- Gap analysis: what is missing against SBTi requirements
- Target draft (near-term and, if relevant, net-zero)
- Update or extension of the accounting as needed
- Submission documentation
- Support in answering questions during the process
Other frameworks
We often touch on EcoVadis assessments and CDP reporting. In both, GHG Protocol carbon accounting and SBTi work already cover a significant share of the answers. We help further where needed, but we do not position ourselves as EcoVadis or CDP specialists; our focus is on carbon accounting and target setting.
Frequently asked questions
Is SBTi mandatory?
No. It is a voluntary framework, but increasingly a practical requirement from customers or investors.
Do we need the calculation ready before the SBTi process?
Yes. SBTi requires valid Scope 1, 2, and (usually) Scope 3 accounting. We often start by running the calculation before the SBTi process.
Should we wait for V2.0 or start now with V1.3?
It depends. In the short term, V1.3.1 is the quicker path to a validated target, but the longer-term benefit may come from V2.0. We walk through this at the start of the project.
